Clear and quick communication between parents/guardians and Dennehotso Boarding School’s faculty, staff, and administrators is crucial. Our educational program prioritizes a safe and healthy learning environment for all students. We work with the local Indian Health Service and collaborate with other medical service providers to ensure student well-being and follow the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Student Illness Procedures

Students are to remain home if they are ill. If a student becomes ill and cannot remain in class, the teacher will send the student to the school nurse/front office. The school nurse/administrator will contact the student's parent/guardian to pick up the student at the school.

Dispensing Medication: Prescription and Over-the-Counter

The nurse/front office administers medications in accordance with the BIE’s Medication Administration Policy. Never send medicines with your student. All medications should be brought to the respective department office, still in their original container, with the prescription and dosage instructions.

If a student needs to take medication of any kind, they should report to the front office, and the front office staff will record the time and date when the medication is being dispensed. If it is an over-the-counter medication, there should be a note from the parent/guardian giving permission to dispense, with dosage, frequency, and special instructions.

Medical Emergency

In a medical emergency, Dennehotso Boarding School immediately transports the student to the local health facility/hospital. A staff member notifies the parent/guardian as soon as possible, and staff remains with the student until the parent/guardian arrives.
